February 1
Henceforth, on the first of the month I shall list my ten favorite found songs from the previous month, the non-2012 ones properly asterisked. This will save me from actually writing much about music, since I loathe pretty much all music writing anymore, even though music is practically all I do on the internet.
The idea is that these are something like rankings that will fluctuate over the months: certain songs may be supplanted, others may not be, and my manic pointless year-end list diggings will be simplified dramatically.
1, PBR Streetgang, Downstroke Sinister spoken word against that hugely warped tech-house line that’s difficult to qualify but animates several of these tracks.
2. Fort Romeau, Jack Rollin’ I’m excited for this EP because there’s a track on it that borrows heavily from Mariah’s “Say Somethin”, which used to be one of my favorite pop songs to drunkenly pontificate about.
3. Grimes, Genesis This girl tweets about nondisclosed stomach ailments, forgetting to wear underwear, and Marilyn Manson. Good thing her music is totally creative and edgy as fuck or I’d have to h8 her.
4. Todd Terje, Inspector Norse At some point the chillier aspects of disco began to evoke the Christopher Nolan/Al Pacino vehicle Insomnia, in that who the fuck can tell if it’s ten o’clock at night or in the morning?
5. Bjorn Torske, Nitten Nitti (Harvey’s Not Normal Mix) See above. Harvey’s my favorite Angeleno, though.
6. Azealia Banks, Needsumluv Footworky drums and a newly-verified hipster-hood rappess, both of which I am not super conversant on, and don’t need to be, because they fill in their own blanks.
7. Jeunesse D’Ivoire, A Gift Of Tears (Silent Version)* Beautiful mechanic Italo from one of those fabulously-priced limited edition analog-synth reissue comps.
8. Blondes, Business Art-damaged house that presents as scrolly wriggles of small-bore pleasure, or hypos on a chalkboard.
9. Ital, Doesn’t Matter If You Love Him When it’s mixed live, the a cappela twist of this sounds like the internet coming to an end—complacency replaced instantly by banshee-like screams.
10. Maceo Plex, Ain’t That Love* Copped this from Juan MacLean’s DJ chart. Lush & minimal.
