My interest in fashion is like my interest in sports: not predicated on any real desire to be an insider or practitioner but obsessed with access nonetheless.

My interest in models, like my interest in athletes, is the same as anyone else’s: people who make a purely physical living are, by and large, freaks. Just why jocks and pretty people are the most popular humans is the paradox nobody talks about.

Where my interest in athletes and models diverges is mostly about the initial point: access. I want to see athletes on the field/court/pitch, and that’s it; the game-ready process isn’t one I care about. But I care way more about the models before and after the shoot/runway than during; the process of making someone already so beautiful she looks haunted a touch more photogenic is surreal.

And as far as what they do after the lights go off, I imagine it amounts to a lot of standing around. Because while waiting to be beautiful, some people have all the time in the world.
